All Skagit Beach Watcher Activities
- Beach Naturalists Interact with the public to foster an understanding of how to enjoy and at the same time preserve our fragile intertidal zones.
- Birds - COASST Provide data on dead birds found while walking the beach, for use by UW School of Fisheries.
- Booths at Public Events Provide educational information / games about our Skagit County environment, flora and fauna at public events.
- Ebb & Flood Report on Beach Watcher activities in the Ebb & Flood newsletter and/or on the web site.
- Eelgrass Education Promote or use the Eelgrass Education Kit developed by WSU Beach Watchers to educate youth about this important ecosystem.
- Eelgrass Monitoring Monitor eelgrass beds to determine their status and investigate factors that might be causing declines.
- Escape Cord Education Provide escape cord and educational materials to recreational crabbers to reduce the unintentional mortality of crabs in lost crab pots.
- Environmental Curricula Support environmental studies in our schools.
- Fidalgo Bay Day One day family outreach event to promote stewardship and appreciation of Fidalgo Bay and Puget Sound.
- General Office Help Help the Beach Watchers Coordinator with general office assistance.
- Intertidal Monitoring Yearly detailed survey of our beaches, to keep baseline data over time on inverterbrates, seaweeds, and beach condition.
- Marine Invasive Species Monitoring Conduct surveys on local beaches to develop a baseline dataset of marine invasive species distribution in coordination with Nakheeta NW and WA State Dept of Fish and Wildlife.
- Marine Mammal Stranding Network Protect stranded mammals (and educate public on what -not- to do), do necropsies on dead mammals found on the beach.
- Creosoted Logs Find, quantify and remove creosote debris on the beaches, to reduce pollution to the marine habitat.
- Beach Litter and Marine Debris Remove from our beaches the litter and marine debris that pose a hazard to both marine and human life.
- Noxious Weeds - Spartina Identify and remove this noxious weed from our beaches before it wipes out native species.
- Pigeon Guillemot Surveys Identify local seabird colonies and conduct population counts.
- Plastics Educate the public about plastic pollution and monitor plastic on the beaches.
- Restoration Help with local restoration projects in fresh water and marine ecosystems.
- Seining Track juvenile salmon in our pocket estuaries
- Seminar Series Invite local experts to speak on various topics highlighting the ecology of Skagit County and Puget Sound.
- Shore Stewards Provide educational materials for shore-line property owners to be proper stewards of this fragile resource.
- Monitoring - Shellfish Provide data on shellfish to WA State / Skagit County Dept of Health to identify potential Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.
- Talks/Presentations Give presentations to community groups, school groups, and others to improve stewardship of our watershed and Puget Sound.
- Testing - Water Quality Take water samples at public beaches during the summer on behalf of the Skagit County Health Department and Department of Ecology.
- Web Site Help to maintain and grow the website as a resource for the general public to learn about how "Everything is Connected!"
- Welcome Wagon Visit new shoreline land owners to share information on shoreline living, resources, and the Shore Stewards program.
- Writing Write scripts for radio 'Creature Features', contribute feature articles to our newsletter, compose public service announcements - use the written word to increase stewardship of Puget Sound.
