Where We Live
Beach Watchers live in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, in counties adjoining Puget Sound.
The Beach Watchers program began in 1989 in Island County.
Its success led to expansion of the program in 2005-2006 to all of the northern Puget Sound counties highlighted in the map to the right.
But what about the counties to the south ??
WSU Extension leadership is working closely with the Puget Sound Partnership and state legislators to expand the WSU Beach Watchers program to all twelve counties of the Puget Sound.
The seven counties in northern Puget Sound that have been funded over the last three years came from a special federal appropriation guided through Congress by Senator Murray. Those county programs are in partnership with the Northwest Straits Commission and its seven county based Marine Resources Committees.
Island County's Beach Watcher program began back in 1989 with help from a Centennial Clean Water grant.
Adequate funding is obviously critical to keep this valuable program working.
