Race Lagoon

Description, size, location and components of the estuary

Race Lagoon estuary covers about 30 acres and is located on the eastern shore, southeast of Coupeville. The area has an open water lagoon, mudflats and a narrow fringe of saltmarsh. It is connected to Saratoga Passage by a narrow open channel in the northern portion and has a sand spit.

Source of fresh water

Freshwater is provided by two small drainages along the western side. Tidal channels have formed which allow tidal flushing.

Plants

Distichlis spicata, Jaumea camosa, Plantago maritime, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Rosa pisocarpa, Spartina anglica, Symphoricorpos albus, and Triglochin maritimum.

Man made obstructions to the estuary

A buffer area has been partially developed for residential use and there are a few floating docks. A road provides a barrier to one side of the lagoon.

Description of the historic estuary

This was a relatively undisturbed marsh system with a northern sand spit.
