This plant, native to California, has been introduced to the Pacific Northwest and can be found growing along the backshores of beaches and in other sandy areas. It has a shrubby form and grows to a height of up to 6 feet. The flowers, present from May to September, are usually yellow but occasionally an alternate form that blooms blue or lilac is seen. The compound leaves have 5-11 leaflets radiating from a central point like the fingers and thumb of a hand. Other common names for this species are bush lupine or yellow bush lupine. It belongs to the pea or legume family.
