Carex macrocephala (Large headed sedge)

This native species and member of the sedge family is found on sandy beaches and in dune areas. The plant grows to a height of about 1 foot with the flower spikes being about 2 inches long. Male and female flowers are on separate plants with the seed producing female plants having larger flowering spikes. Large headed sedge ranges from northern Oregon to Alaska and is also found in Asia. It is also commonly called big headed sedge.
