Soranthera ulvoides (Studded sea balloon)

Copyright © 2006 Jan Holmes
Mature individuals of this brown seaweed look like bumpy brown grapes. Individuals grow to ~ 6 cm in diameter and are hollow in the center. When squeezed they “pop” and smash together but do not disintegrate into filaments like Leathesia. The dark bumps are spore producing structures. Soranthera grows epiphytically on Neorhodomela and Odonthalia, (species of red seaweed) in the mid to low intertidal area.
