Prionitis sp. (Bleachweed)

Copyright © 2007 Jan Holmes
Several species of this red seaweed are found in our area. All have flattened main blades, up to 35 cm (14 in) tall, with flattened side blades extending out from narrowed attachment sites. Side blades are often as wide as or wider than the main blade and can have numerous smaller bladelets attached. The flattened main branches may be curled up in some individuals. Main branches are thick; colors vary from yellowish (often in tide pools) to deep purplish red.
When Prionitis is torn or wadded up in your hand it gives off the smell of laundry bleach. Prionitis prefers exposed shorelines and tidal channels and is often found on rocky bottoms covered with sand. .
