Copyright © 2007 Jan Holmes
Individuals of this profusely branched red seaweed grow in the lower intertidal on rocky beaches with moderate wave action. Branching to three orders is in one plane and alternate. The final branching order is a tiny cluster of branchlets resembling a flower with spiky petals. A single cylindrical sharp pointed blade erupts below each branchlet cluster. O. floccosa can form dense mats with individuals reaching 40 cm (16 in) in length. Color is dark reddish brown to black.
