This perennial red seaweed grows to 20 cm. (8 in.) in rocky high energy areas in clumps or mats.  Individuals resemble sprigs of pine trees or bottle brushes.  A discoid holdfast leads to one or a few main branches with short stiff branchlets extending out from all sides of the main branch in a somewhat spiral formation.  The color is dark purplish black.  This species has a high thermal tolerance.
