M. coulteri grows to about the same size as M.  borealis and under similar conditions although it is more likely to be found growing epiphytically on other seaweeds.  It branches alternately on both sides of a central axis throughout the many orders of branching.  The delicate plume-like side branches eventually terminate in tiny curved "claws" like M. borealis.
