This short - to about 4 cm (1.6 in) tall - red seaweed is most often found in exposed areas in the mid intertidal, often in tightly packed patches and often associated with Halosaccion and Leathesia.  The blades, arising from a perennial holdfast, are deeply curled on the lower portion then flair out somewhat on the upper half into broad rounded lobes.  Like Halosaccion, juveniles of M cornucopiae are often dark purple near the holdfast but are yellowish green on the upper half of the blades.
