This encrusting red seaweed is so thin it looks like red permanent marker ink.  Thin patches less than 1mm. thick are bright pink to rose or purple red and tightly adhere to a rock substrate.  Hildenbrandia can be found in the high to mid intertidal and in tide pools.  Look for it where you find the limpet Tectura scutum which grazes on Hildenbrandia.  Of the three life history phases most red seaweeds exhibit, two have been lost in Hildenbrandia including the sexual or gametophytic phase.
