Hedophyllum sessile (Sea cabbage)

Copyright © 2006 Jan Holmes
Hedophyllum is stipeless and has a holdfast composed of numerous short pencil thick haptera. A single blade arises from the holdfast but it can be lacerated in numerous places to resemble multi-bladed seaweed. The blades tend to be wrinkled with undulating small pockets (bullations) in wave-protected areas and smooth in more turbulent areas. We have seen both morphologies at Rosario Beach. Some studies have shown Hedophyllum to be highly thermally sensitive, intolerant of water temperatures higher than 15°C (59°F).
