Several species of this red seaweed can be found in our area in the lower intertidal and subtidal on rocks and as epiphytes on other seaweeds. Colors range from rose red to dark purple. Blades can be circular to fan-shaped and are rather deeply divided into several orders. Tips and margins of blades can be oval or ragged and "chewed" or torn looking. Species of this seaweed have no midribs or veins. Blades have a glossy to semi glossy appearance. The two most common species found in our area, C. violacea and C. flabellulata, range in height from 4 to 27 cm.
