The green sea urchin can be found low in the intertidal zone in rocky areas, sandy areas, on floats and in kelp beds. The test (the shell exclusive of spines) reaches a diameter of about 3 inches and has relatively short spines. The tube feet are dark purple.   Green sea urchins feed primarily on algae.   Two other species of urchins may be found in the intertidal in the Puget Sound area.   They are the red urchin ( Strongylocentrotus franciscanus ) and the purple urchin ( Strongylocentrotus purpuratus ).
