Scaleworms belong to a family of polychaete worms which have scales called "elytra" on their dorsal surfaces. They may be free living or live in association with other invertebrates such as tubeworms, keyhole limpets, gumboot chitons, or sea stars. Watch for free living species in mussel clumps and on the undersides of rocks. (See also Polychaetes.)
