This bivalve mollusc species has circular valves, the upper of which is larger and heavier with rather fine radiating ribs. The more delicate lower valve has an oval hole through which a thick byssus extends to permanently attach the animal to a hard surface. Valves may grow into unusual bent forms to conform to the shape of substrate they attach to. Maximum length of this species is 5.3 inches (13 cm.). The jingle shell ranges from the low intertidal zone to a depth of 300 feet. Other common names for it include Pacific jingle, rock oyster, blister shell, false jingle shell, green false jingle shell, and money shell. It is also known under the scientific name Pododesmus macrochisma.
