The long narrow projections on the dorsal surface of this species are white and somewhat threadlike proximal to the body but the distal tips are clubbed and yellow, yellow-orange, or orange.  There are variations in the color pattern of those found further south in California.  This nudibranch reaches a length of 1 inch (2.5 cm.) and can be found from the lower intertidal zone to a depth of 115 feet (35 m.).  It feeds on encrusting bryozoans.

This species has also been known under the scientific name Laila cockerelli and the common names orange spotted nudibranch and Laila doris.
