This 5-rayed sea star is easy to identify with its bright red or red-orange color, its slim, graceful rays, and its smooth texture. It grows to 8 inches in diameter. Some blood stars have gray patches at the base of the arms or on the disk. Look for it in rocky areas where it preys on sponges and encrusting bryozoans.
