A member of the family Cirratulidae, this tubeworm has the appearance of closely placed clusters of tiny dark filaments sticking out of a layer of coralline encrusting algae.  The filaments are actually the feeding appendages and gills of the individual worms.  Beneath the surface of the coralline algae, the worm’s body is tucked away in a u-shaped burrow.  This sedentary polychaete may also be found inhabiting burrows in empty shells.  Look for this species on high energy rocky areas from the intertidal to a depth of 330 feet (100 meters).

It is also known under the common name coralline encased filament worm.
