Two species of the genus Amphissa are seen intertidally in the Pacific Northwest.  Amphissa columbiana (the wrinkled amphissa) is more common in this area.  This species can attain a length of 1.25 inches (3 cm.) and the axial ridges on the shell are parallel to the long axis of the shell.  Amphissa versicolor (the variegated amphissa) grows to a length of 0.7 (1.8 cm.) inches making it somewhat smaller and in addition, the axial ridges on the shell are not parallel to the long axis of the snail but run at a bit of an angle.  A. versicolor is the more common species in parts of California.  These snails are scavengers.  They are also commonly called dove snails.
