This little nudibranch reaches a length of only 1-¼ inches.   It is distinctive in having yellow tipped papillae covering its body and the gills and rhinophores tipped with reddish coloration that ranges from maroon to brown.   There are two color phases, one with the primary background color being white and in the darker variation, brown to brownish gray.   This species can be found in rocky areas from the low intertidal to water 33 feet deep.   It feeds on bryozoans and colonial ascidians.

Other common names for this species are wine plumed spiny doris, red gilled dorid, and rufus tipped nudibranch.
